EARTHQUAKE ACTION GUIDE

What can be done before Earthquakes
  • Identify likely hazards, such as unsecured bookshelves, or objects that can fall during the shaking.
  • Do you have unsecured TV's on brackets that can fall.
  • Locate doorways and sturdy tables to get under during a tremor.
  • Locate your emergency exits and know alternate exits.
  • Locate your fire extinguishers/fire hose reels.

During an Earthquake
  • If indoors – STAY THERE. There could be falling debris outside.
  • Take cover under an internal door frame, sturdy table or bench.
  • Keep away from windows, mirrors, chimneys, overhead fittings, and tall furniture.
  • In high rise buildings, stay clear of buildings, walls, power lines, trees etc.
  • DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS.
  • If you are in a vehicle, stop in the open until the shaking stops.
  • Listen to the radio for warnings before moving. Listen out for emergency personnel's directions.

After an Earthquake
  • Check for injuries. Apply first aid. Do not move the seriously injured unless in danger.
  • Do not use telephone (Avoid congestion) unless there is a serious injury or fire.
  • Turn off electricity, gas and water. Check for fuel/gas leaks before lighting matches/torches etc.
  • Check for water or sewerage leaks, broken electrical wiring etc.
  • Check for cracks and damage, including the ceiling or roof.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks. Evacuate the building and remain in your evacuation assembly area, and remain there for further instructions.
  • DO NOT go sight seeing or looking at damaged buildings, and keep away from roadways for emergency vehicles.
  • Advise Security or Emergency Teams of any likely hazards, ie gas leaks etc.

Please note, after an earthquake, aftershock or smaller tremors can be expected. We ask you to remain calm, and assist others who need help.

If you are unable to raise help by phone etc, remain where you are, emergency teams will be dispatched, and will search for those who are likely to be trapped. Observe where you came from and assist emergency teams by advising them where missing persons could be.

If you do become trapped in a building or such, conserve your energy, if you have drinking water, don't drink it excessively incase you have internal injuries. If you are injured, try not to eat and drink very little. You may require surgery if you have internal injuries.
