About the Emergency Management Unit.

The Emergency Management Unit looks after the following:

  • Emergency Management
  • Emergency Control Organisation
  • Emergency Exercises and evacuation drills
  • Emergency Equipment
  • First Aid training & equipment

The University of New South Wales is committed to providing a framework for emergency management in order to respond to the following priorities in the event of an emergency:

  • To save lives
  • To protect property & prevent harm to the environment
  • To restore essential university infrastructure
  • To restore academic & administrative Functions

It is for this reason that the University has developed an Emergency Management Plan. The Emergency Management Plan sets out the management protocols that will control and coordinate emergency response. The University recognises that effective planning must be flexible, designed to meet all types of emergencies and must include the key planning issues of preparedness, response and recovery.

The Emergency Management Approach at UNSW

At UNSW, irrespective of the incident or emergency, the University's emergency management arrangements will be identical in principle. This principle is called an "all hazards" approach. This approach recognises that it is impossible to predict accurately the course and impact of unexpected events. Therefore, emergency management arrangements must be flexible while supporting sound and timely decision making. Using this approach in the work place may assist in reducing liabilities.

  • What can be done to prepare the community for when they occur
